Puerto Rico Facts

Puerto Rico is also known as Porto Rico and has a population of approximately 3.6 million people. Its located in the North Eastern Caribbean.

Puerto Rico was originally the home to aboriginal people for centuries; until the island was discovered, and taken over by the Spanish Crown in 1493. Puerto Rico celebrated its 500th anniversary, from the date it was discovered by Christopher Columbus. After discovery, the Island was ruled by the Spanish for over 400 years. This eventually changed when the Treaty of Paris signed on December 10, 1898, and eventually, Puerto Ricans became USA citizens from 1917.

Another important date for Puerto Rico was July 1950, when the Public Law 600 came into place, highlighting that current political and economic relationships with the US, would continue.

While the country has its own constitution, Puerto Rico has been described as having commonwealth status with the US. There are no travel restrictions between the US and Puerto Rico, including no customs taxes or quotas on shipments.

On the subject of shipments, Puerto Rico houses some of the best natural harbours in the Caribbean, such as in San Juan.

Puerto Rico doesn't just have a good climate, and house a few sandy beaches though, it actually plays a major role in the worldwide and especially, UK economy. The Puerto Rican economy is diverse to say the least and accesses the like of US duty free and tax incentives, and has continued to grow since it's massive development in the 1950?s. As part of the US, the Island has to abide by US minimum wage laws.

The island itself measures about 100 * 35 miles. The beautiful cost line stretches a massive 501km. The landscape ranges from flat coastal plains to a mountainous interior. The island benefits from a sub tropical climate making it a great location for vacations. The average temperature on this tropical island is 74 degrees Fahrenheit.

As far as population goes, Puerto Rico houses around 3.6 million people, so not a great deal, most being US citizens, on the other hand, around 2.7 million Puerto Ricans are habitants of US turf.
